Andrea Burk has signed on to lead a skills and drills event on Field 3 near Kings County Academy the afternoon of Sept. 4.

Burk, who recently acted as a sports broadcaster for the Rio Olympics, suited up for Canada during the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Paris. The team was etched in history as the first Canadian squad to compete in a World Cup final, returning home with silver medals at the close of the tournament.

The co-ed skills and drills session Burk is leading in Kentville is open to players of all levels, with a rookie session from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and some more advanced drills for experienced players from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a meet and greet period that includes a question and answer forum with Burk and autograph signing.

Organizer Mike Shroeder, head coach for the Central Kings Gators high school boys’ team, hopes players of all levels will come out to hear what Burk has to say.

“Andrea is such a strong role model for all athletes and, like any athlete, she’s had her ups and downs,” said Shroeder.

Perseverance, Shroeder said, can take athletes a long way in the sport of rugby.

“Dig deep to make it through and make the most of the opportunities you’re given.”

He hopes local rugby enthusiasts will take advantage of their chance to learn from someone who has competed in the sport at the international level.

“She was more than happy to come out and support grassroots rugby.”

Shroeder is pleased to see rugby steadily gaining in popularity throughout the country.

“Rugby is a sport for everybody. It’s a community,” he said.
